How long until my driveway is complete?
- Every driveway is unique. If we are able to give you a new asphalt driveway without redoing the base, you can expect to see your finished product in about 2 days. However, if you need a new base installed, you can expect a bit of a longer timeline. We have to allow the new base to set for about 4 weeks before we apply the asphalt.
Should I seal coat my driveway?
- Opinions differ in the asphalt industry regarding whether to apply a sealer or not. Peters Paving does not promote sealing driveways. Sealers, especially if applied too soon, can actually do more harm to your driveway than good. If applied too soon, sealers prevent your driveway from curing properly. Also, over the years, all those layers of sealer will start to crack and allow water to puddle and get absorbed into your driveway. If it is still your personal preference to seal your driveway, we would recommend that you wait at least a year to allow the asphalt to cure properly first. Also, we would recommend resealing only every two to three years after the initial sealing has been applied.
Can I just resurface my current driveway?
- On occasion, we are able to just apply a new coat on top of an existing asphalt surface, however, the existing surface needs to be in great shape. Asphalt is a flexible material so if your existing surface has cracks or broken/uneven areas, the new layer is going to look the same within a few short months.
How long until I can drive and park on my new driveway?
- We recommend that you wait at least 7 days before driving or parking on new asphalt. If you must drive on your new asphalt before the recommended 7 day waiting period, we encourage you to sweep masonry cement on the surface to help cure the asphalt and harden it.
How thick does the asphalt need to be?
- Residential driveways are typically paved to be 2.5 inches thick once compacted. Commercial projects are usually paved to be 4 inches inches thick once compacted. Thickness is not the only factor to be considered when working with asphalt. A solid foundation beneath the asphalt is essential in supporting the pavement. Peters Paving will always ensure that there is a strong base before installing new asphalt.
How long can I expect an asphalt driveway to last?
- An asphalt driveway, that has been properly installed using quality materials, should last anywhere between 20-35 years. Many factors can affect a driveway's longevity, such as weather conditions, sub-soil conditions, drainage, and usage.
